*Backdated: added to the log on 2026-09-13 for a thing made on 2026-07-19. The original is `docs/historic/lor-19July-explainer-doc.html`; what is embedded is a verbatim copy — the pictures are inside the file, so it is a large page.*

## What it was

An explainer, not a plan, in its own words: a map of the ideas in play three days into the
reboot — where they agreed, where they clashed, which few had earned the word settled. It is
the first place the game is described by the sentence that still describes it: a world where
every new material, machine, creature and item is invented inside the game, by combining things
that already exist there, out of a fixed alphabet of sixty-four elements.

Its first section is the one that mattered. The early work — the [observatory](/deliverables/18),
the [table](/deliverables/19), the [graph](/deliverables/20) — was physics-first: elements had
behaviours derived from their structure. This page records the inversion: the game does not
live in its physics, it lives in what players make, so the meanings of elements are hand-
authored and the elements become something closer to words — some nouns, some verbs, some
grammar. An item is a small program written in those words, and its layout is the source code.

## What carried through

The inversion is the spine of the game as it stands. Elements have authored names and readings.
A spell is a recipe — an ordered list of elements that makes one complex item; the first one,
the Lightning Tower, is one ice crystal, three stone and one fire crystal, in that order. The
explainer's casting table is one of the two live candidates for how spells get made, against
the cauldron of the later voice notes; that is still an open front, and the codex says so.

## What did not

The "elements as code" table this page leans towards — twenty-two elements as WHEN, SENSE,
IF, ACT and the like — was superseded; the game did not become a programming language you
lay out on the ground. The sentence survived. The syntax did not.
