summary: Kris's explicit definition of done for the MVP release of Spellgrove — the list that says when the first release is finished.
repo: land-of-lor
depends_on: ["store-release","battle-arena-poc","server-architecture","spell-crafting-interface"]
parked: false
standing: Defined 2026-10-10. Dying is done (#27, 2026-10-24); #29 done 2026-10-30; #30 done 2026-11-01 (the cap, the switch and the friendly message live; the Spend Alert is Kris's own). 0.4.0 (the realms client, Release C) with both stores; Release C live.
```
## Where this stands (2026-11-01)
**#30 is done** (2026-11-01): the realm's door went live with Release B — the cap counts online
people (40), never someone already inside; the Builder's `/building/realm` holds the switch, the cap,
"new players welcome", the words and the process rail (48); switching off drains rather than kicks;
a refused newcomer is told "The realm is full right now — try again shortly." and the web shell asks
`/director/info` before its 40 MB download (Try again / Load the game anyway). The richer client words
(the realm's own message, Play offline) ride the Release C store build — **0.4.0, with both stores
since the same evening**, Release C live on the server with it. **The billing alert is Kris's own** — a
DigitalOcean Spend Alert at 100% and 200%, in the DO console.
**#29 is done** (2026-10-30, `docs/handoff/servers-and-capacity.md`, with
the capacity work #2–#6 and private servers #43 in the same plan). /terms now carries "Paying for
things": online play may one day need a subscription, a subscription buys room not power, the stores'
rules govern renewals and refunds, a child's purchase is a parent's — live from master the same
evening; the store listings' "no purchases" answers stay true until something is sold.
**Dying is done** (#27, deliverable #40, 2026-10-24): Kris's spoken spec, built, tried on his phone over staging, live at `5dd10dd` (APK v58) and in **0.2.2, sent to both stores the same evening** — Apple's waiting 0.2.0 cancelled and 0.2.2 submitted in its place, Google Play's production track updated.
Defined by voice, 2026-10-10: the list below is what "MVP done" means. Each item is one GitHub issue labelled [`epic:mvp-definition-of-done`](https://github.com/krisrandall/land-of-lor/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+label%3Aepic%3Amvp-definition-of-done), so done-state is read off the issues.
The first two are half-way: **the game is live on Google Play** (production since 2026-09-22; from 2026-10-19 the stores' badges are on spellgrove.com's front door and `/play`, the browser build a quiet line under them) and **iOS 0.1.0 is waiting for Apple's review** (submitted 2026-10-18; #19 closes when Apple approves). **Both trade marks are filed**: SPELLGROVE (2706928) and LEGEND OF RAH (2706929), Australian word marks in classes 9 and 41, filed with IP Australia on 2026-10-19 — the receipt and what happens next are `workshop/brand/trademark/`; #20 stays open until they register.
**Kris's own:** Apple's review (the handoff's status block), the DigitalOcean Spend Alert, the terms wording.
Open: are tower spells and life spells really MVP? Kris is not sure — both are flagged.
Open issues: [`epic:mvp-definition-of-done`](https://github.com/krisrandall/land-of-lor/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+label%3Aepic%3Amvp-definition-of-done) — #19 to #30, twelve; #19 and #20 are now waiting on the store and the examiner rather than on work.
## The definition of done
Each bullet is one issue (the idea, what Kris said, notes).
- **Game live in both stores** — Google Play and the Apple App Store. ([#19](https://github.com/krisrandall/land-of-lor/issues/19)) — see `docs/handoff/store-release.md`. *Google Play: live (2026-09-22, linked from the site 2026-10-19). App Store: 0.1.0 waiting for review since 2026-10-18.*
- **Trademark / IP for "Spellgrove" and "Legend of Rah"** — Kris said "copyright"; in practice it is trademark. "Legend of Rah" needs checking against "The Legend of Zelda". ([#20](https://github.com/krisrandall/land-of-lor/issues/20)) — continues from Kris's [Claude web session](https://claude.ai/chat/bd4e14c4-1162-4a2b-8167-8e9c8ca2cb6a); see `workshop/brand/naming.md`. *Cleared 2026-10-10, filed 2026-10-19 (`workshop/brand/trademark/`); registration is months away.*
- **PvP battle arenas** — not fully defined; Kris has most of the ideas. ([#21](https://github.com/krisrandall/land-of-lor/issues/21)) — see [`battle-arena-poc`](../battle-arena-poc).
- **Shared creation areas** — non-battle shared Areas where players modify terrain and build together. ([#22](https://github.com/krisrandall/land-of-lor/issues/22))
- **Terrain-modifying spells** — several: walls, cellars, house-like structures from the existing ground types, and chaotic ones such as volcanoes that feed PvP and shared play. ([#23](https://github.com/krisrandall/land-of-lor/issues/23))
- **[MVP? — to confirm] Tower spells, the full set** — every kind of tower via the cauldron, across element types; tower defence is fundamental and makes arenas richer. ([#24](https://github.com/krisrandall/land-of-lor/issues/24))
- **[MVP? — to confirm] Life spells, the full set** — every kind of life, same reasoning. ([#25](https://github.com/krisrandall/land-of-lor/issues/25))
- **Rareness definitions** — all items are common today; set up the rarity tiers. ([#26](https://github.com/krisrandall/land-of-lor/issues/26))
- **Ability to die** — minor but explicit, including from lava and the like; implied by battle arenas. ([#27](https://github.com/krisrandall/land-of-lor/issues/27)) *Done 2026-10-24 — Kris's full spoken spec is in the issue; deliverable #40, `docs/handoff/death.md`.*
- **Offline levels** — some. No offline mode exists today, but the architecture was specified to support it, so verify that and build on it. ([#28](https://github.com/krisrandall/land-of-lor/issues/28))
- **Terms of service** — /terms states online features may later require a subscription; confirm it is live and the store answers stay consistent. ([#29](https://github.com/krisrandall/land-of-lor/issues/29))
- **Hard player cap and "servers are full" handling** — `MAX_ACTIVE_AREAS` as a config value changeable without redeploy; a friendly message for new online joins, existing players untouched; a remote online-off flag; a billing alert at about double normal spend (Kris's own); related to the capacity work (#2). Automatic offline switching was discussed and deliberately deferred. ([#30](https://github.com/krisrandall/land-of-lor/issues/30)) *Done 2026-11-01 — live with Release B (`docs/handoff/realm-admission.md`); the Spend Alert is Kris's own.*
## Not in the MVP
No issues for these; they are future, likely captured in other epics, and explicitly outside the definition of done: create-your-own-spells · an open market for trading items ([`barter-marketplace`](../barter-marketplace)) · in-app purchases of items and spells · players creating their own areas · armour and clothing.
