The Kernel Observatory v0 — the element physics running in a browser tab

epic: element-table delivered

Open the Kernel Observatory

Runnable, not a screenshot. Press run, or step one tick at a time; pick an element from the palette and click the grid to drop an item or paint ground; switch the overlay to the heat or charge field; hover a cell to inspect its matter and the strain on each of its six lines. Backdated: added to the log on 2026-09-13 for a thing made on 2026-07-17. The original is docs/historic/lor-kernel-sim-v0.html; what is embedded is a verbatim copy.

What it was

The first thing that ran. The design at the time said the world’s chemistry should be lawful — elements with behaviours derived from their structure, heat and charge flowing through fields, matter ageing and transmuting on its own — and this page was built to find out whether that machine held together. It is deliberately small: statics and dynamics only, no recipes, no formulas, no tempo axis, and whole parcels of matter turning at once rather than line by line. The tunables are live, and there is a transmutation log so you can see what changed and why.

What carried through

The instinct that the world changes on its own while you are not looking survived, in a different shape. Today’s game has no fields and no transmutation, but the ground grows things: grass sheds Dirt over time, an ice patch grows Ice Crystals, the volcano in the Badlands throws Fire Crystals around itself on a timer. That is generation, not chemistry — and it came from the same wish this simulation was chasing, that matter should do something.

What did not

The machine itself. Two days after this page the design inverted: the game lives in the things players make, not in its physics, so element meanings became hand-authored and the field machinery went on the shelf. The current design doc still carries the axes and fields, marked with Kris’s own doubt. This is the one working model of that road not taken, which is why it is kept.
