Fake players who keep the world from feeling empty. They are real accounts with houses in the Village (lit while they're out) and a small villager above their names. When a real player is about, they trickle out of their front doors and go about errands; when the world fills up with real people, or empties, they walk home and their houses go dark. Nothing runs for them in a place no real player is in.
